Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week: Multiplication & Division Tricks!

Learning Intentions:

  •         Analyze and apply strategies for multiplication and division within 100 (Grade 3)
  •          Recall and apply multiplication number facts, with factors to 12, and related division number facts (Grade 4)
  •         Investigate multiplication and division strategies
  •          Relate multiplication to repeated addition
  •         Relate multiplication to skip counting
  •         Recognize interpretations of multiplication and division in various contexts

We have continued our exploration of Multiplication & Division and students are strengthening their abilities to solve multiplication and division equations and word problems. This week we talked about some of the tricks we can use to help us remember or solve equations. Here are some of the tricks we've talked about:

  • 1's: Anything multiplied by 1 is that number (ex. 3 x 1 = 3)
  • 2's: Skip Count by 2's or double the number!
  • 5's: Skip Count by 5's
  • 9's: There are so many cool tricks with the 9 times table! For example, we love using the hand trick to solve numbers that are multiplied by 9! Ask your child to demonstrate this for you.
  • 10's: When multiplying by 10, add a zero to the original number.
  • 11's: Numbers under 10 that are multiplied by 11 is that number twice! (ex. 2 x 11 = 22)

Students were tasked with filling out a blank multiplication chart using all the tips and tricks that we discussed. They were amazed to see how many facts they were able to recall without drawing pictures to find the answer.

Take some time this weekend to practice multiplication facts with your child!

FYI - Our Multiplication & Division tests will be coming home early next week! Keep an eye out for these.

Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week: 3D Art

Learning Intentions:

  • Texture can be represented from a range of different studio techniques.
  • Colour can be made to appear dull or bright.
  • Gradations of tone are useful to show depth or the effect of light on objects.
  • By increasing details in the foreground the illusion of depth and reality can be enhanced.
As part of our Celebration of Learning, students created a collaborative Art piece to remind us that even while we are all different, we all love and need love.  This art also reminds us that love is shown is so many different ways.   Each students was given two square pieces of paper and they were given a specific colour for the background. Students used fabric, foam, paint, markers, tissues paper, yarn - you name it.  They then could create a heart using again, any materials, but also any colours they wanted.  The results were so unique and creative.  Check out our final product and how good it looks all together.

Reminder:
We are leading the Celebration of Learning on Wednesday, February 26th at 9am.  Please join us if you can!

Happy Wednesday!

This week we have been working hard and are inviting you to our: Celebration of Learning!

When: Wednesday, February 26th at 9am
Where: Terrace Road Gymnasium
Why: To share and celebrate our learning around kindness, Pink Shirt Day, love and friendship

Our students are putting together heartfelt poems, entertaining plays, beautiful songs and amazing art.  Please talk to your child about all the work we are doing and what their role will be in the assembly. We are excited to share all this work with you and hope you can join us. Wear a pink shirt if you can!

Reminders:

- Enjoy a long weekend and see you on Tuesday, February 18th! Grade 4s will be going skiing that day and grade 3s will be at school with Ms. Legere working on our current units.

Pictures:
- Enjoy pictures form our Kindergarten buddies, to our polar tigers, to our math games and art projects! Oh and crazy hair day :)

Weekly Update

 Happy Friday!

Here is one of the activities we have been working on this week: Multiplication & Division Strategies!

Learning Intentions:

  • Analyze and apply strategies for multiplication and division within 100 (Grade 3)
  • Recall and apply multiplication number facts, with factors to 12, and related division number facts (Grade 4)
  • Investigate multiplication and division strategies
  • Compose a product using equal groups of objects
  • Relate multiplication to repeated addition
  • Relate multiplication to skip counting
  • Model a quotient by partitioning a quantity into equal groups or groups of a certain size
  • Visualize and model products and quotients as arrays
  • Recognize interpretations of multiplication and division in various contexts

We have started our unit on multiplication and division! We have explored what these concepts mean and how multiplication & division are connected. We are now working on familiarizing ourselves with different strategies we can use to solve multiplication and division equations and word problems. We have practiced drawing equal groups, making arrays and using repeated addition and subtraction to solve equations. We discussed how everyone has a preferred method of solving equations, but it is important to be familiar with different strategies so that we have multiple tools we can access when working through various problems. Ask your child to model equal groups, arrays, and repeated addition and subtraction, and ask them what their preferred strategy is!

Reminders:

- Please return WinSport Field Trip forms before February 12th.

- Report cards are available for you to view on PowerSchool.
