Last Weekly Update!

We have had a fantastic week to finish off the great year we had! In Math, students completed a Math Mystery focused on data collection! Students had to interpret data from various graphs to figure out the clues!

Students have been working on writing, drawing and colouring a memory book of their year.  They are thinking back on field trips, assemblies, and fun events from the year.  We hope you enjoy looking through this with your child when they bring it home on their last day. Students also proudly created a cover page and an “About the Author” write-up for their Mountaintop writing.  Mountaintop writing is a compilation of student’s independent writing that they did on a monthly basis.  It is such a great way to see the improvements they have made over the year.  They will bring this home on their last day of school as well.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had our much-anticipated Sports Day! Students moved through different stations with a partner that involved fun activities and challenges that tested their athletic abilities! The fun culminated in Tug-of-War challenges and a Colour Run! Thank you to the many parent volunteers that helped make this fun afternoon possible! 

On Thursday morning, we had the opportunity to meet as a school one last time for our final assembly, where we shared highlights from the school year and said farewell to the staff members that will be leaving TRS. We also had time as a class to celebrate the year by sharing favourite memories from the year, watching a slideshow of pictures, and having one last appreciation circle. We have so much to be grateful for from this school year!

Weekly Update

Happy last Friday!

This week students split up into two groups for Health.

Here is what the Grade 3's did:

Learning Intentions:

• Food provides energy and nourishment to the brain and body.
• The most effective way to hydrate the body is by drinking water.
• Some foods and drinks can provide hydration to the body.
• Optimal brain and body functions are influenced by foods and hydration.
• Explore the effects of food and hydration on the brain and body.
• The characteristics of food can be affected by cooking, storing, preparing, freezing, drying.

The Grade 3’s focused on nutrition this week in Health. We reviewed the Canada Health Food Guide and came up with examples of each type of food group. Students made a survey asking their peers what their favourite type of fruit, vegetable, protein, or grain products are. We also researched information about why water is so important for us and students made a visual journal page showcasing the information that they had learned. 

Here is what the Grade 4's did:

Learning Intentions:

• Recognize that puberty marks the beginning of a new life stage as individuals move toward becoming mature adults.
• Describe changes that happen during puberty.
• Explore how transitions into puberty are acknowledged in different cultures.
• Identify credible sources in the community to support individuals through the changes that occur during puberty.

The Grade 4’s learned about puberty this week.  We talked about the different changes they are about to go through physically, socially and emotionally.  Students got to ask questions through an anonymous question box.  One of their assignments this week was to find a safe adult to talk to about puberty and maybe ask any questions they might have.  If they come to you with questions this week, that is why.

• Please see Ms. Harbourne's email about upcoming Spirit Days.
• Students will be bringing home lots of work next week. It would be helpful if they had a bag to help carry things home each day. 
• Sports Day is on Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure students are dressed for the weather, have a water bottle and an extra snack.

Here is one of the fun activities we have been working on this week: Pixel Art and Fractions!

Learning Intentions:

• Model fractions of a whole quantity, length, shape, or object, in various ways, limited to denominators of 12 or less.
  
• Visualize fractions as compositions of a unit fraction.
• Identify the numerator and denominator of a fraction in various representations.
• Name a given fraction.
• Determine fractions equivalent to a given fraction.

Students have been practicing writing various fractions based on pictures.  We are slowly working toward comparing fractions with different numerators and different denominators using symbols <,> and =.  Students are now creating their own pixel art pictures and then writing fractions representing the different colours they used in the picture.  So their numerators will be the numbers of squares that are a specific colour and the denominator is the total number of squares coloured.  

Reminder:

• The Grade 4's will begin their Human Sexuality Health unit on Monday, June 16th. Forms were sent home last week with more information on what we will be covering. If you DO NOT want your child to participate in the lesson, please sign and return the form. If we do not receive a form from you, we will assume we have your permission for your child to participate. If you have any questions, please let me know.
• We will have two outdoor Golf lessons on Monday & Tuesday next week with Mr. Mike (weather & smoke permitting!). Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather with good outdoor shoes, a water bottle and perhaps an extra snack!
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  

Weekly Update

Happy Friday!

Here is a look at one of the activities we did this week: Zoo Field Trip!

We had a great time exploring the zoo on Wednesday as a school community.  Students enjoyed the playgrounds, seeing each other at lunch, the butterfly pavilion, the tigers and the penguin exhibits.  There were some interesting sculpture creations too, made out of pastics found in the oceans; there were polar bears, snakes and penguins.  They were pretty sad that the red pandas weren't there.  It was a wonderful way to spend the sunny day together.

Reminders:

Grade 4s brought home an booklet outlining their Health lessons that are coming up the week of June 16.  Please read through this carefully and only return if you do not want your child to participate.  If we do not receive a form from you by June 13th, your child will participate in our health lessons as usual.
