Here is a look at one of the tasks we did this week: Practicing Addition & Subtraction!

 

Learning Intentions: 

• Grade 3: Apply strategies for addition and subtraction within 1000
• Grade 4: Apply strategies to add and subtraction within 10 000
• Model regrouping by place value for addition and subtraction
• Explain the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction of natural numbers
• Add and subtract natural numbers using standard algorithms
• Estimate sums and differences
• Assess the reasonableness of a sum or difference using estimation
• Solve problems using addition and subtraction

Now that we have completed our unit on Place Value, we are moving on to looking at Addition and Subtraction. Grade 3's need to be able to add and subtract within 1000, and Grade 4's need to add and subtract up to 10 000. We have been reviewing the procedures for the standard algorithm as well as strategies that students can use to support them with their calculations, such as using known facts, drawing pictures or using a beaded number line. Students have practiced solving equations as well as word problems. Students also played some Math Games that incorporated Addition & Subtraction skills. We will continue solidifying our skills over the next couple of weeks. 

 

Here are a few ways you can support your child with their addition and subtraction skills:

• Give them 3-digit or 4-digit addition/equations to solve
• Give them an online challenge:
• 3-digit Adding/Subtracting
• 4-digit Adding/Subtracting
• Complete the daily Solvemoji Junior Puzzles
• Play games at home that include addition or subtraction skills! Crib is an awesome game to practice addition. Here are other suggestions of games you can play at home with a deck of cards.
• Encourage them to complete their Pixel Art Mysteries (which will be posted onto our Google Classroom on Monday)

On Monday, students will get their Place Value Tests back and complete an assessment reflection on the test. Please take the time to review the test and reflection with your child.

Here is a look at one of the Science tasks the Grade 3's did this week: Designing Naturally Awesome Objects!

 

Learning Intentions: 

• Relate a processed material to the natural material from which it originated.
• Discuss how interaction with natural materials is guided by relationships with the land for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.
• Students investigate and analyze how materials have the potential to be changed.

Grade 3 students have started their first Science unit all about Matter! We have looked at what natural and processed materials are and examples of each. We have also discussed how different Indigenous groups respectfully interact with natural materials from plants, animals, the land or the sky. After looking at some objects that are created solely from natural materials, we went outside and started designing objects we could make from the natural materials around us. Students creatively designed toys, clothing, accessories and clothes! Check out some of their designs below: 

Here is a look at one of the tasks the grade 4 students did this week in Social Studies: Mapping and Alberta’s land regions research

Learning Intentions: 

• Where is Alberta located in relation to the other provinces and territories of Canada?
• What are the major geographical and natural vegetation regions, landforms and bodies of water in Alberta?

Students looked at a map of Canada and created their own on which they labelled the provinces and territories and then coloured it neatly.  We then moved on to Alberta’ six different land regions and labelled a map of where these are found.  Ask your child if they remember which land region Calgary is in! Now students have been assigned a research project for which they are to use the assigned website to read and listen to facts about the different regions and write notes on each one. Feel free to check this out on our Google Classroom.

Here is a look at one of the tasks we did this week: Written Responses to Videos from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

 

Learning Intentions: 

• Share information of cultural significance passed between generations of people
• Engage in dialogue to express and understand messages
• Create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes
• Create written texts that draw upon a variety of sources of inspiration
• Access information from a variety of sources to expand knowledge
• Capitalize words appropriately and include a variety of punctuation
• Implement Terrace Road School's Commitment to Truth & Reconciliation, in alignment with the CBE Education Plan, by teaching the reality of Indigenous' Peoples treatment, the importance of reconciliation, and celebrating Indigenous Culture & Languages

 

In honour of Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, we spent the week watching videos created by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. We learned about the awful treatment that Indigenous children experienced at residential schools, the importance of reconciliation and the amazing songs and dances from different Indigenous groups. We listened to 'Every Child Matters' by Phyllis Webstad, which reminded us that everyone matters and deserves to feel safe at school. Because Indigenous children were not able to sing their cultural songs or participate in their cultural dances while at residential schools, it is important for us to take the time to watch and appreciate the culture of different Indigenous groups. Students particularly enjoyed watching throat singing, the Red River Jig, and grass dancing. The videos led to rich discussions and written responses from our students.

 

 

Here is a video that explains what reconciliation is for students. It would be beneficial to watch the video with your child and continue the conversation at home, as students had many questions about residential schools.
